Those of you who participated last week know how this works. For those of you who don’t, here’s what we do:
1. Every Friday, based on a specific need that we know either because it’s in the news, or because it’s been privately brought to our attention, or because it’s something that isn’t getting the attention it rightly deserves, we’ll post that need on this blog, as well as on Twitter, with the hashtag #FundingFriday and a link to where you can donate online. It might be a struggling inner-city Catholic school, a homeless outreach, a crisis pregnancy center, even a foreign mission.
2. Click the link and then make a donation, however small, to that cause. I’ll put $10 out there as a round number. If it’s a tight pay period and you can only give $5, or even $3, do it. If it’s been a good pay period, and you can give $25, $50 or more, that’s bonus. The point is, you don’t have to break the bank to make a solid impact on the organization if enough people participate.
3. RT to your entire list of followers and encourage them to join in.
4. While your payment is processing, make it a point to pray one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be for the intentions of the organization.
THIS WEEK’S RECIPIENT: BENEDICTINE VOLUNTEER CORPS’ OUTREACH TO THE ELDERLY IN KENYA
There’s a great group of sisters who have been helping elderly Kenyans living in poverty to make soap that they can then sell to provide for the needs of their community. In previous years, they’d been getting subsidies from the government to help them replenish soap supplies, but that’s gone away. It only costs $20 to provide a package of flour, sugar, rice and soap-making materials to one elderly person in need, who is often still working to provide for his or her family.
Kate Drinkwater from Benedictine Volunteer Corps is coordinating this effort. They have a goal of $3500 to provide a package for each of the 250 elderly cared for by the sisters. As of this writing, they’ve managed to collect $1615 of that. Let’s make up the difference by the end of the day today and blindside them with our generosity! They don’t know yet that they’re this week’s #FundingFriday recipient. Heck, I don’t think they even know what #FundingFriday is. To show them what we’re about, donate here and encourage everyone in your social networks to do the same.
And may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
